Designing Better Business Dashboards

Learn how to design dashboards that surface the right insights, reduce clutter, and help teams make faster decisions.

Noah Bennett

The best dashboards aren't the ones with the most charts. They're the ones that help people answer important questions quickly.

Before adding widgets or metrics, identify what decisions users need to make. Every chart, KPI, and table should support a specific business goal.

Prioritize your most important metrics

Place the metrics users check most often at the top of the dashboard. Revenue, active customers, conversion rate, support tickets, or project progress should be visible without scrolling.

Secondary insights can appear further down, allowing users to explore additional details only when needed.

A clear visual hierarchy helps users understand the health of their business at a glance.

Balance summaries with details

Dashboards should provide both a high-level overview and the ability to investigate further.

Use KPI cards for quick summaries, charts to reveal trends over time, and tables to display the records behind the numbers. This combination gives users confidence in the data while keeping the interface easy to navigate.

Design for action

A dashboard shouldn't just display information. It should help users take action.

Allow users to filter data, drill into records, open customer profiles, or jump directly into related workflows. Turning insights into actions reduces context switching and makes the dashboard more valuable.

Keep improving

Your first dashboard won't be perfect, and that's okay.

Monitor how people use it, identify which metrics matter most, and refine the layout over time. Removing unnecessary widgets is often more valuable than adding new ones.

The best dashboards evolve alongside the business they support.
